I’m Not an Angry Person: How Repressed Anger Sabotages Men’s Power and Relationships

“I’m not an angry person.”

I told myself this for 30 years.

I genuinely believed I couldn’t get angry.

Growing up, I saw the destructive nature of anger in my home and swore I’d never be like that. I judged those who were — especially men.

So I suppressed it. And two things happened:

  • I became a people pleaser — the “nice guy” who couldn’t set boundaries. I said yes when I meant no, avoided conflict, and let people walk all over me.

  • I became resentful and passive-aggressive. Since I couldn't express anger directly, it turned inward. I blamed others, made snarky comments, withdrew, or gave the silent treatment.

The result?
– I never got what I truly wanted
– I couldn't express my needs
– I felt constant self-loathing and shame
– I became avoidant and shut down in relationships, hurting people I loved

On the outside: the “good guy”
On the inside: angry, avoidant, and disconnected

Everything changed when I did the inner work and realized:
👉 Anger is a healthy, normal emotion

It signals that our boundaries are being crossed and gives us energy to take action.

The moment I said, “I’m allowed to be angry”, my body relaxed. I accessed a power I didn’t know was there — like unlocking a hidden reservoir of confidence and assertiveness.

Through deep emotional work and the Sacred Rage Process with the Embodied Man Institute, I faced years of repressed hurt. It was so powerful, I became a trained facilitator in this transformational process.

Now I help other men access their sacred anger — and finally own their power.

If you’ve told yourself “I’m not an angry person,” it’s time to look deeper.

Your next level of leadership, courage and inner freedom lies on the other side of owning your anger.
